Approximate shape from shading by linear filtering

  1. Apply a set of filters localized in space and spatial frequency;
  2. Phase-shift the responses by ;
  3. Scale amplitude by , where f if the central frequency;
  4. Bias to remove variation due to illumination direction;
  5. Reconstruct shape by ``inverse filtering''.
Resembles spatial filtering between the retina and the primary visual cortex.
