PrerequisitesCog/Psych 214/614, or permission of one of the instructors. The course is open to graduate students and to advanced undergraduates.
Credit To get the full 4 credits:
  1. read the assigned material before it is discussed in class;
  2. briefly present and motivate your selection of topic for the final essay in class on Monday, April 21;
  3. regularly participate in the discussions in class;
  4. submit a final essay (2500—5000 words), in Harry Segal's mailbox (2nd floor, Uris Hall), by 3:30pm, Friday 5/9; the essay must integrate at least two of the science fiction readings with one or more of the science fact papers (not limited to those covered in class).


Cog 531 - technical details

Each SF work is accompanied by
  1. a choice of scientific papers pertaining to the issues at hand (see the individual theme pages and the [upcoming] week-by-week plan);
  2. a few slides with live links to related online material - book reviews, other scientific papers, author interviews, paintings, poetry and random associations evoked by the target book in the sick minds of the instructors. Students are encouraged to suggest links of their own (by posting messages to the bulletin board or emailing the instructors).
